Codecs

A codec (coder/decoder) defines how audio is encoded for transmission and decoded for playback.

In this dialog, you can enable or disable individual codecs and set their priority. Place your preferred codecs at the top of the list. The codec used in a call is negotiated with the remote endpoint and depends on shared support.

The displayed bitrates are net values. Actual bandwidth usage is higher because voice data is additionally encapsulated in RTP, UDP, and IP packets. For example, G.711 typically requires around 80 kbit/s gross bandwidth and may therefore be unsuitable for very slow connections.

PhonerLite supports the following codecs:

Echo Cancellation

Echo Cancellation means analyzing of data to be sent and the filtering of containing received data. By activating this option you can avoid that you your microphone records data from the speakers.

SRTP

If speech data should be encrypted, you can activate the option SRTP . Atthe moment there is no encrypted/secure key exchange implemented in PhonerLite, so this option is not very useful, but a first step.

The peer (phone or provider) must support SRTP too. The actual implementation is tested against Grandstream GXP2000 and the German VoIP provider dus.net .
